Allegheny Power Decides to Use FieldSmart In the Office As Well As the Field

DALLAS (JUNE 8, 2001) - MapFrame Corporation announced today that Allegheny Power (Greensburg, PA) is now using FieldSmart View™ software in the office as well as the field.

Two years ago, Allegheny field crews began using FieldSmart View on pen computers to access stored facility maps from the company’s Smallworld GIS. Like all FieldSmart applications, the viewer is designed for field personnel with little computer experience.

For example, users can quickly find a structure or pole by printing an ID number. The map then zooms to the object. Or, to see a detailed view of a geographic area showing structures and their attributes (with compatible unit code, phasing information, etc.), all you do is draw a circle around the area of interest.

This power and ease-of-use convinced Allegheny that the mobile mapping system would be beneficial to other personnel including office workers who need access to maps, but don’t have the time or technical background to master a complex GIS.

The transition to the desktop was easy because MapFrame had already developed a desktop version of its software, substituting the mouse as a pointing device and preserving the use of gestures. FieldSmart “Office” also supports menu selections, toolbar icons, and hotkeys.

The software will eventually be available to a broad group of office users including Electric Operations Managers, Call Center personnel, substation engineers and others. FieldSmart View will run on laptops as well as the desktop, enabling users to easily transport the system from one office location to another.

As with the field software, the laptop version will incorporate MapFrame’s FieldSmart compression technology to insure that Allegheny’s entire service territory fits on the mobile computer. Allegheny believes that the ability to quickly find and view facility maps for any part of the service territory is essential for analyzing and solving problems related to spatial location.

Allegheny Power provides electric service to approximately 1.5 million customers in parts of Maryland, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and West Virginia.
